AEO

AEO is not SEO with chatbots

The useful distinction between ranking in search and becoming a source that answer engines trust—compared line by line.

Search is changing from a list of links into a synthesized answer. That sounds like a small interface shift, but it changes what “visibility” means.

Traditional SEO asks: Can a search engine find, understand, and rank this page?

Answer engine optimization adds a different question: Is this source clear, credible, and specific enough to shape the answer itself?

The comparison, line by line

SEO AEO
Core question Can a search engine find, understand, and rank this page? Is this source clear and credible enough to shape the answer?
Competes for Position in a list Inclusion in a response
Primary event The click The mention, cited or uncited
Optimises Pages Entities and evidence
Unit of work Keyword, URL Claim, source
Measured by Rankings, impressions, sessions Mention rate, citation share, answer accuracy
Failure mode Ranking below a competitor Being omitted, or described incorrectly
Determinism Broadly stable, testable Non-deterministic, varies between runs
Time to feedback Days to weeks Immediate to measure, slower to move

The rows are not alternatives to choose between. Technical accessibility is a prerequisite for both, and a company that fails at SEO fundamentals rarely succeeds at AEO. What the table separates is where the work goes once those fundamentals are in place.

The unit of value has changed

In search, the click is the primary event. In an answer engine, your company can influence a decision without receiving a click at all. A model may cite your research, repeat your category language, compare your product, or omit you entirely.

That means measurement must expand beyond rankings:

  • How often is the brand mentioned for relevant questions?
  • Which claims and sources are cited?
  • Is the description of the product accurate?
  • Which competitors are consistently recommended instead?
  • Where does the model lack enough evidence to include you?

What answer engines reward

There is no single AEO trick. The durable work looks less like gaming an algorithm and more like reducing ambiguity.

Clear entities

Your site should make it unmistakable who you are, what you offer, who it is for, and how it differs. Consistent language across first-party and third-party sources matters.

Quotable knowledge

Original data, precise definitions, expert commentary, and well-structured explanations give an answer engine something useful to retrieve and cite.

Distributed credibility

Your own website is only one part of the evidence graph. Independent coverage, trusted directories, customer discussions, and relevant communities corroborate what you claim.

Start with usefulness

The strongest AEO strategy is not to manufacture more pages. It is to publish the clearest, most defensible answer in your field—and make the evidence easy for humans and machines to verify.

SEO still matters. Technical accessibility still matters. But in the new discovery layer, being indexed is only the beginning. The goal is to become part of the answer.
